No School? Hit the Ice: Skills Clinics on Days Off

Every parent knows the feeling. The district calendar shows a day off, the kids are thrilled, and you’re wondering how to fill eight hours without a screen in every room. This season, RAHA has an answer: get them on the ice.

No School Day Skills Clinics run on select District 196 days off throughout the season. Each session is one hour of focused, small-group skill work led by experienced instructors. Sessions are grouped by level, so younger skaters and older players each get drills built for where they are in their development.

What skaters work on

These aren’t scrimmages. Clinics zero in on the fundamentals that make every other part of the game easier. Expect plenty of edge work, crossovers, and transitions. Puck handling and passing under pressure get a lot of attention, along with shooting mechanics and quick-release drills.

The goal is simple: more touches, more reps, and more confidence. In a regular team practice, a player might handle the puck for only a few minutes. In a small clinic, skaters are moving and working nearly the entire hour.

Goalies welcome

Clinics are built primarily for skaters, but goalies are welcome and encouraged to attend. Shooters need someone to shoot at, and goalies get a steady stream of game-speed looks from every angle. It’s a great chance for netminders to sharpen tracking and rebound control without the pressure of a game.

Small groups, real attention

Each session is capped so instructors can actually coach, not just supervise. That means corrections in the moment, a quick demo when something isn’t clicking, and feedback players can take back to their team practices. Because of the cap, spots fill quickly, so register early once dates are posted.

Why it’s worth the ice time

Development happens between games. The players who make the biggest jumps over a season are usually the ones who find extra, intentional reps outside of their regular schedule. No School Day clinics make that easy: no driving across the metro, no long camp commitment, just an hour of quality work at a rink you already know.

And honestly, it’s a pretty great way to spend a day off. Skaters leave tired, happy, and a little bit better than when they arrived.

How to sign up

Upcoming clinic dates, session times, and age groupings are posted on the RAHA calendar and announced in our weekly emails. Registration is handled online, with a link included in every announcement. Grab a spot, pack the gear bag, and we’ll see you at the rink.
